Demonstration of Japanese Style Printmaking

During the last exhibit at the Lillian Davis Hogan Gallery in the Toner Student Center at Saint Mary's University, Associate Professor of Art Preston Lawing demonstrated traditional Japanese printmaking techniques.

The exhibit featured prints by numerous artists including Lawing, and was in support of relief efforts after the earthquake and nuclear disaster in Japan.

Currently on exhibit in the Lillian Davis Hogan Gallery in the Toner Student Center is a show featuring work by painter Andrew Rieder, entitled "These Things Happen".

Rieder's colorful and powerful paintings, including this work, "It’s All Fun & Games Until It’s At Your Expense", will be on view until November 13, 2011. The gallery is open daily from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm, and is free and open to the public.

The two senior shows held in the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries this spring were a great success! Two groups of seniors displayed their work, the culmination of 4 years of hard work.

Work displayed included photography, design, painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, and more.

Undergraduate Show #1 Opening and Second Year Art Major Reviews

Recently, second year studio art and graphic design students displayed their work in Saint Joe's Hall for their second year reviews. This opportunity provides feedback, suggestions, and encouragement for students as well letting the greater campus community see the achievements of art and design majors as they progress in their majors.

Many faculty, staff, and students have taken the opportunity to see what department of art students have been doing.

The opening of the first senior art and design show, held April 2, was well attended by the Saint Mary's community as well as family and friends of the participating students.

First Undergraduate Senior Show

The first senior show of art and design majors graduating this spring is currently on display in the Lillian Davis Hogan Gallery in Saint Mary's University Toner Student Center. The well attended opening was held April 2nd. The exhibit, entitled Through The Lashes after a Van Gogh quote, features the work of nine seniors.

The impressive work by this group of seniors will be on display through the morning of April 24th. The gallery is open from 9am to 8pm daily, and is free and open to the public. The second group of nine seniors will hold the opening of their show April 30th from 4:00-6:00pm, and will be open for the remainder of the academic year. An example of each participating artist and designer's work is below.

Lisa Truax Exhibits at Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries

The spring exhibit schedule at SMU's Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries will feature the work of SMU faculty and students. After the conclusion of the William Berry exhibit on February 20th, the work of new Department of Art and Design faculty member Lisa Schreiner Truax will be featured in a show entitled "Synthetic Harmony".

The show runs February 24 - March 27th, with an opening reception held February 24th from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

The following two exhibits filling out the remainer of the academic year are two shows encompassing SMU's large graduating art class in studio art and graphic design. These exhibits will open April 2nd and April 30th. Opening receptions and show titles will be announced in the coming weeks.

Exhibit at Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries

The spring show line up at the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries in SMU's Toner Student Center has something for everyone. The exhibition "The Eye Behind the Eye, the Art of William A. Berry" will be on view through February 20th, 2011.

This retrospective exhibit celebrates the life work of this internationally renowned artist, illustrator, and teacher. There are a range of types of work and subjects in this exhibit, including still life colored pencil drawings, portraits, and architectural drawings.

Berry did work during his career for Newsweek, The Reporter, and Esquire magazine among others. A reception will be held February 4th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a presentation by Dr. John Whelan of SMU's Department of Art and Design and Valerie Wedel, of Missouri Valley College, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

2010 All Campus Undergraduate Student Art Exhibition

On November 18th, the 2010 All Campus Undergraduate Student Art Exhibition opened in the Lillian Davis Hogan Gallery in the Toner Center on St. Mary's Winona Campus. The opening was well attended and featured over 70 works of art from students in 16 different majors.

Work being exhibited is in a wide variety of media, including graphic design, charcoal, photography, painting, sculpture, watercolor, and print making.

There is an excellent range and depth of work being shown, but after careful deliberation, the juror was able to choose seven pieces to recognize. Places one through three received prizes, and all received recognition during the opening and the juror's comments to the opening's crowd.

First place is Ashley Blum's (Studio Art and Graphic Design major) Honey is the Milk of Life, made of paper towel, wheat paste, and cloth.

Second place is Stephanie Binot's (Graphic Design major) watercolor painting, Untitled.

Autumn 360.

SMU Art Club Travels to Chicago

This past weekend, November 5-7, a group of students from the SMU Art Club traveled to Chicago.

After braving city traffic and arriving Friday evening, students walked around downtown Chicago, seeing the famous Chicago skyline and the Sky Bridge in Millenium Park, often referred to as 'The Bean'.

The Art Club stayed downtown just one block from Grant Park and Michigan Avenue, making walking to area attractions very easy. Saturday morning the group walked up to Navy Pier for the SOFA exhibition, or Sculptural Objects and Functional Art. The SOFA exhibition was a great opportunity to see the work of contemporary artists and galleries from around the country and world, all in one place at one time. It was a great chance for the art majors in the group to see how contemporary working artists market and sell their work. As an added bonus there was a ceramic auction and show of outsider, folk, and Intuit art at the same location.

After SOFA, we walked to the Chicago Institute of Art. Students spent the afternoon in the museum, looking at whatever sections of the museum interested them the most. A few museum highlights were the painting American Gothic and a wide range of work, including pre-historical ceramics, mid-evil armor, the new modern wing, a miniatures exhibit, impressionist master works, and Chinese bronzes.

After a long day of walking and seeing a wide variety of art, we had Chicago deep dish pizza for dinner and saw the city lights walking back to the hotel. It was a great time and a first experience in Chicago for some students.

Congratulations go out to our very own Mariana Sanchez, senior Graphic Design major, who has been chosen to be Outstanding Female Senior for 2010 at this year's Founder's Day Convocation.

Mariana is a busy student, active both in and out of the department. She plans to attend Western Illinois University for graduate studies in Graphic Design after graduation.

And the mystery of who was inside Big Red, our SMU mascot has finally been revealed!

Mariana's parents flew in from Mexico for the event to add to the festivities.

MAM! or bust - or, be careful what you wish for...

Our annual Art Club trip was a success, nearly a smashing success. The drive across the Wisconsin wasteland was filled with mirth, but otherwise uneventful (MPH blurred on GPS device to protect the image of Lasallian virtue).

However, our entrance to Malt-waukee came nearly to a close encounter of the failed brake kind when our #2 pace car opted to test the theory of cause and effect on the rear bumper of the #1 pace car. Fortunately the quick reflexes of the professional driver in #2 averted disaster (and yet couldn't prevent the outburst of screams in the car's interior).

All was well, however, even if we had to skip a sit down lunch (see box of lunch 'fixings' compliments of food service).

We did fortunately get to the museum just in time to see the closing and opening of the 'wings'. Add to that some wonderful art, Pizzaria Uno pizza later that we happened upon while we were lost taking the wrong Interstate exit, and the trip was deemed: a success!

Alma High School art students visit

The Art and Design department was the first stop on an 'art day' tour for 15 high schoolers in Mary Weber's art classes from Alma High School, across the river in Wisconsin.

The day included a visit with Brother Roderick and a discussion of the graphic design area, a look at printmaking with Preston Lawing, and a walk through the painting and drawing area with Dr. John Whelan. The group then checked on Rob McColl's two-dimensional design class before heading over to the Lillian Davis Hogan Gallery to see the exhibit on display by character designer Chris Ayers and sculptor Maureen Costa.

Having taken the long way to the gallery via a pleasant autumn walk along Gilmore Creek the students worked up quite an appetite. They finished off their visit to SMU with a gallant attempt to overwhelm the soft serve ice cream machine in the caf.

We hope with such a big tour topped off with so many calories they still had some energy left for their next destination, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

Art Department Student and Faculty Gathering

The Saint Mary's Art and Design Department hosted the first "all school" gathering on September 17, 2009. Forty students were present for announcements and information about the Art department. Refreshments were provided by the McColl family of Castle Rock Farms, and included fresh homemade bread, chili and cupcakes. Monster cookies made by the SMU Art Club.

Door prizes were drawn, and included an Apple iPod (case), Andy Warhol's soup (Campbells' Chicken Noodle), and Hannah Montana hand sanitizer.

...Elizabeth Daugherty's design - for the entrance to the Art and Design Department, was chosen from a wide array of entries submitted by all students in Brother Roderick's graphic design courses this spring.

The actual sign will be manufactured and installed by Big Guy Design in Winona, owned by Rich Hultman, SMU art and design alum.

Elizabeth is on a roll of sorts, having her cover design chosen for the spring Typography class project.

Nine students traveled to Italy on May 10th for a three week study abroad experience. After a long flight to Rome, we arrived safely. We took the Leonardo Express into Termini Station, and after getting settled at the Casa La Salle, we took off for the Roman Coliseum, (originally the Flavian Amphitheatre.

Art work includes photography, oil and acrylic painting, drawings, printmaking, ceramics and graphic design work.

Convex Complexities

Foundations II site-specific art

Foundations II students have created works of art in various public spaces on campus; spaces that are not usually paid attention to – a corner near a door, a shelf that is not used, under an entryway in the back of a residence hall - in order to make the viewer stop and become more aware of their surroundings.

The art is a panel on which they were to paint what is behind it, as though looking through a piece of glass. On this panel they could add something that might not ordinarily be found there: a cat, a bird, a butterfly, or a 20 dollar bill, for example.

The work will be 'on exhibit' Thursday, April 23, from 10 am to 2pm. Some works may still be in place after that time, but using poster putty makes these works quite 'temporary'.

Art Department Welcomes Paper 101

The Art Department and Graphic Design II (AR403) sponsored PAPER 101 on Wednesday afternoon. Attendees included students, faculty and several design staff from Saint Mary's Press. This information session included overviews of paper manufacturing, use of coated vs uncoated paper, sustainability in the printing and paper industry, and opportunities and suggestions for networking in the print and graphic design fields. Specification Representative Paula Allan from xpedex and Account Manager Mike Libby from Sappi Paper Company did a wonderful job of engaging the students and opening a dialogue about paper sourcing.

Art Club Adopts a Fountain

The Saint Mary's Art Club adopted the only water fountain in St. Joes hall as part of "Our Drinking Fountains, Our Water" a collaborative yearlong project between SMU, Winona State University, Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical, Southeast Minnesota Water Resources Board and the city of Winona.

The Art Club design is based on a triptych altarpiece, using stained glass, flowing tissue paper, faux candles, and incorporates traditional craft material (gold painted macaroni).

The altar is dedicated to Saint Aqua-Nice.

Getting the Big Picture

The Alphabet Book

Typography class recently designed and printed a book about the alphabet. Each student designed pages for individual letters, or a letter and a character, such as &, !, or ?

Printing and binding of the book was done at Saint Mary's Press, just across the parking lot from the art building. Saint Mary's Press now prints 'on demand', offering high quality printing and publication services to small batch projects.

A great project enabling our graphic design students to experience the project from start to finish.

All About Paper!

Paula Allan from International Paper (iPaper) will be coming in from the Twin Cites to give a workshop on paper Wednesday April 15th at 1:30.

Her presentation will be about 90 minutes including q&a.

This will be an excellent opportunity for students to acquire a good background knowledge of the many different kinds of paper available for art and design projects... for printing and packaging etc.

Plus: iPaper will be supplying each person attending the workshop with a FREE packet of various paper samples!

The event will either be in room 11 or in the new AV room on the first floor of St. Joe's.

Cubism

Drawing II students tackled Cubism head-on and came out stronger because of it. The work above by Maggie V. was one of several excellent interpretations of a simple still life of a lamp, a basket, some bottles, and other items. Check the slide show on the side panel for other students' works. It will be worth your while.

Advanced Time and Motion

The final short film project in Foundations II involved 4 students in a group. Each member had to script their own path to a common destination. The goal was keeping each member's journey distinct while preserving unity within the group's convergence. The 'Granola' group was Sarah, Keisha, Morgan, and Marie.

Time and Motion in Space

An extension of the skills learned in Foundations I is a look at time and motion in the picture plane. A fun assignment exploring those concepts involves the entire Foundations II class creating a short one minute video that makes a tennis ball travel through the halls.

Each student films a segment that includes various shots, points of view, and directional flow.

The finished product is 'stitched' together to create a time-motion based work.

Drawing Like Andrea Joseph
